Sefydlwyd Cantref ar 15 Tachwedd 1991, wedi cyfres o gyfarfodydd
cyhoeddus dros yr ychydig fisoedd blaenorol i geisio canfod defnydd
cymunedol amgen i Gapel Bach y Plase, y Bala.
Capel wedi ei adeiladu ar Grîn Bach y Bala, dros gan mlynedd cyn hynny, ac a
brydleswyd i Eglwys Bresbyteraidd Cymru, oedd y capel bychan hwn. Caewyd yr
achos crefyddol yno yn ystod y 1980au. Y dyhead a gododd yn y cyfarfodydd yn
ystod 1991 oedd sefydlu canolfan dreftadaeth neu amgueddfa fechan i gofnodi'n
treftadaeth i'r trigolion lleol a dwyn y dreftadaeth honno i sylw ymwelwyr â thref y
Bala.
Mabwysiadwyd cyfansoddiad y gymdeithas newydd mewn cyfarfod ar 10 Ionawr
1992 ac aethpwyd ymlaen ar fyrder i gofrestru fel elusen gofrestredig ac i drefnu
sawl darlith ac arddangosfa yn ystod y flwyddyn honno. Profodd y
gweithgareddau'r flwyddyn hon i fod mor llwyddianus a phoblogaidd fel yr
ystyriwyd bod angen i adeiladu estyniad i'r cyn-gapel. Adeiladwyd estyniad i'r
adeilad gwreiddiol yn ystod 1995 i greu cegin, toiled a storfeydd.
Bellach mae Cantref yn cynnal cyfres o ddarlithoedd yn ystod misoedd cyntaf pob
blwyddyn gyda chyfres o arddangosfeydd celf ac arddanosfeydd treftadaeth yn
ystod misoedd cynhesach y flwyddyn.
Cantref was established on 15 November 1991, after a series of public
meetings over the previous few months to try to find an alternative
community use for the Capel Bach at Plase, Bala.
This small chapel was built on the Little Green at Bala, over a hundred years
before that, and leased to the Presbyterian Church of Wales. The religious cause
there was closed during the 1980s. The aspiration that developed in the 1991
meetings was to establish a heritage centre or a small museum to record our
heritage for the local residents and bring that heritage to the attention of visitors
to the town of Bala.
The constitution of the new society was adopted at a meeting on 10 January 1992
and the society quickly proceeded to register as a registered charity and to
organise several lectures and exhibitions during that year. The activities of that
year proved to be so successful and popular that it was considered necessary to
build an extension to the former chapel. An extension to the original building was
built during 1995 to create a kitchen, toilet and stores.
Cantref now holds a series of lectures during the first months of each year with a
series of art exhibitions and heritage exhibitions during the warmer months of
the year.
